From Thinking to Feeling: The Power of Somatic Gratitude
Welcome back to another Transformation and Thankful Thursday. Last week, we introduced the concept of Transformation and Thankful Thursday, which highlighted how applying a 360 method to holistic living assists with your transformation.
Gratitude should be your Attitude; free from complaints, murmurs, gossip, and overall a talebearer of negative news. Establishing a consistent gratitude practice serves as the bedrock for internal resilience. Today, we assume a posture of intentionality as we step into transforming our lives. Unfortunately, most of us treat gratitude like a mental checklist. For a brief period, this checklist works. It makes us feel that we are marching toward our mark, but is it the end? No, it is the beginning. We think, "I’m thankful for my health, my coffee, and my career," and then we move right along. While that’s a great start, there is a deeper level of healing available when we move the practice from our heads into our bodies. This is what we call Somatic Gratitude.
The word "somatic" simply means "of the body." In the world of Psychology when we combine our Positive Intelligence (PQ); our ability to shift from a negative to a positive mindset with Emotional Intelligence (EQ), we create a physical release. As a person of faith, we cannot think about a positive mindset without renewing the mind. See our Scripture Reading for the day. Renewing the mind, requires a level of walking with intention and knowing who you are and whose you are. If that does not make you grateful, then nothing will. Instead of just knowing you are thankful, Somatic Gratitude is about feeling the physical sensation of that thankfulness. It is the difference between reading a description of a warm bath and actually stepping into the water. The reality, this is equivalent of walking in faith and being not just hearers but doers of the word.
According to well documented research, when we experience deep, felt gratitude, our nervous system shifts. We move out of "Fight or Flight" (the sympathetic nervous system) and into "Rest and Digest" (the parasympathetic nervous system). When you hit this state, you might notice:
This isn't just "woo-woo" talk; it is a biological reset. By focusing on these physical sensations, we tell our brains that we are safe, allowing stored stress hormones like cortisol to finally dissipate.
To build on our progress from last week, try this 3-Step Somatic Shift during your reflection today:
As you continue your journey, remember that transformation doesn't happen in the clouds of our minds, it happens in the cells of our bodies. Today, don't just count your blessings. Feel them.
