Knowing The Signs: The Writing is on the Wall

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how we work, learn, communicate, and make decisions. From search engines and social media feeds to healthcare and financial planning, AI has become deeply integrated into daily life. Yet, as technology becomes more sophisticated, an important question emerges: Are we becoming more informed, or are we becoming more vulnerable to believing what technology presents as reality? As a result, is this contributing to the dumbing down of upcoming generations? Generations X and older still had traditional learning methods including critical thinking. In the 21st century the verdict is out. Today, we explore part 2 of AI Psychosis and share possible signs that you need a "Digital Detox."

The term "AI Psychosis" has recently gained attention as researchers, mental health professionals, and technology experts observe instances where individuals develop distorted beliefs, paranoia, confusion, or an unhealthy attachment to AI-generated content. While AI itself does not cause psychosis in most people, excessive dependence on AI-generated information can contribute to misinformation, reinforce delusions, and weaken critical thinking skills. At GRID Holistic Living, we encourage a holistic approach to living and working. In this post, the focus is on technology and the extent that we embrace innovation in our homes, offices, schools, businesses, and as recreational activity. Be sure to check out part 1 on AI Psychosis for its fundamental definition.

Though not professionally recognized in the work of Organizational Behavior and Psychology, AI Psychosis is described in situations where individuals become so immersed in AI-generated content that they begin to lose the ability to distinguish between verified reality and artificial outputs. Researchers have documented cases where chatbots and AI systems unintentionally reinforced false beliefs, conspiracy thinking, or emotional dependency. This is particularly concerning because modern AI systems are designed to generate convincing responses, even when they are factually incorrect. Technology experts call this phenomenon "hallucination," where AI confidently presents inaccurate information as truth. The danger occurs when people stop verifying information and begin trusting technology more than evidence, critical thinking, real history, expertise, or lived experience.

Some scholars purport that the brain was not designed for constant digital input rather human brains evolved in environments where information traveled slowly and relationships were face-to-face. Today, the average person encounters more information in a single day than previous generations processed in weeks. Continuous exposure to:

  • Social media algorithms
  • AI-generated content
  • Deepfake videos
  • Deceptive campaigns
  • Endless news cycles and,
  • Funny cartoon videos, that may not be as innocent as it appears

All of this noise disrupts our mental wellness and it becomes overwhelming for the brain's natural filtering systems. Please refer to yesterday's post on Mental Consumption on GRID's Mindful Monday. According to research, excessive digital consumption is linked to increased anxiety, cognitive fatigue, stress, and reduced attention spans. Afterall, technology should serve humanity, not manipulate it.

Signs You Need a Digital Detox

On a Toxic Free Tuesday, we offer signs you may need a Digital Detox. In assessing your situation, consider whether any of the following statements apply:

  1. You rarely verify information before sharing it.
  2. Social media significantly impacts your mood.
  3. You spend more time online than in meaningful relationships.
  4. You feel anxious when disconnected from technology.
  5. You trust AI-generated answers without independent verification.
  6. You find yourself constantly doom-scrolling.

If you responded 'yes' to two or more the questions, then you might need a Digital Detox. While habits are hard to break, the good news it is not impossible. These habits do not indicate weakness. They indicate the need for intentional boundaries. So, join GRID Holistic Living on another Toxic Free Tuesday as we share four ways to protect your peace and thus your mind.
